From Disabled to Dancer!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanesha Scott.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

This is a continuation of my story. In 2020 I was diagnosed with a debilitating muscle condition called polymyositis. Polymyositis is a rare autoimmune disease that is characterized by muscle loss and muscle weakness. I went through intense physical therapy and medical concoction for over a year. This inspired me to write my first book in 2021 called “When I Got Sick: A Story of Tragedy & Triumph- The First Year,” which is available on Amazon. Now that I am in remission from polymyositis, I was inspired to start dancing.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

I have overcome a lot of adversity in my life, but I must say being diagnosed with polymyositis was one of the most physically, mentally, and emotionally draining life events that I have endured. I had many dark days. I remember when I started to experience swallowing issues in August of 2021. At this point, I could not swallow food or any liquids without choking. I was going through hell at this point. That is no way to have to live life. God did not design our bodies for suffering.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I am a Life Coach; however, I have not practiced since my diagnosis of polymyositis. Becoming a life coach has allowed me to gain different perspectives on life-altering situations. I decided to start dancing to inspire others going through similar situations to not give up hope. I am not a dancer by nature; however, I have always been inspired by dancers- particularly hip-hop dancers. Although I know I look funny doing these dance challenges on TikTok, I am excited to have a second chance at mobility. Having polymyositis is similar to being paralyzed so being able to move my limbs is something I will never take for granted again.

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Success is in the eye of the beholder. My piece of advice is to follow your heart. Do those things that you think you cannot do. I’ve been blessed to be able to do everything I’ve set my mind to most recently becoming a first-time author and of course now a dancer. You don’t want to have any regrets when you are 70 years old looking back at your life.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

Success is following your heart. Putting yourself out there even if you “fail.” I like to say even if you “fail” by definition, actually, you are a winner for trying and taking a leap of faith. You will never know how things will turn out if you never try. Also, never listen to the naysayers. Most of the people that will try to discourage you have never taken a leap of faith in their own lives. My main saying is “Do you.”

What’s next for you?

Up next for me is my continued effort to make my dance videos. I also look forward to starting on my second book which will be released in 2023, and most importantly continuing to focus on my good health and remaining in remission from polymyositis.
