For Sylvester Bracey Jr., some of life’s most lasting lessons arrived later than expected. They came through conversations with his father, Sylvester Bracey Sr., after the two finally connected and eventually lived together.
Those conversations changed both men. Now, they are shaping Bracey Jr.’s next chapter.
In the third quarter of 2026, the founder of Inspiration by Sylvester is transitioning into inspirational speaking, bringing a deeply personal story of fatherhood, forgiveness and identity to audiences in person and virtually.
A Father’s Voice, Rediscovered
Bracey Jr. grew up without his father in the home, an experience that later gave their conversations greater weight. His father, a Marine who served during the Vietnam War, had his own story to tell.
Footage of Bracey Sr. speaking about his wartime experiences appeared in the 1970 documentary The Black G.I., which is held by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Decades later, clips featuring him gained tens of millions of impressions across social media, according to Bracey Jr. The renewed attention eventually led ABC7 News Chicago to feature the Bracey family’s story.
For the younger Bracey, public interest in his father’s voice confirmed something he had already begun to understand: personal stories can travel far beyond the people who first lived them.
“Voices matter, and voices lead to choices,” is a premise that now guides his work.
Taking the Story From Screen to Stage
Bracey Jr. began sharing lessons from conversations with his father through his social platforms, including Cuuulcha by Sylvester: Conversations w/my Father. His curiosity about their shared history also led him to create and star in Kindred Spirits, a 14 minute short film exploring love, forgiveness, fatherhood and sonship.
The film was later used as the closing piece at the Smithsonian NMAAHC’s Pearl Bowser film festival in Brooklyn.
That reception helped clarify his next move. Rather than allowing the story to remain primarily on screens, Bracey Jr. wants to bring its lessons directly into rooms where people are wrestling with their own questions about family, identity and change.
Building a Blueprint for Change
Public speaking is not entirely new territory for Bracey Jr. As a prior co-chair of Empowering Black Professionals, a 900 member employee resource group at a major commercial insurance carrier, he had opportunities to speak with Chicago high school students and HBCU college students. He also mentors college students and young professionals.
Through Inspiration by Sylvester, those experiences are becoming a more formal mission centered on awareness, growth, structure and stability.
His message begins with a simple observation that carries the weight of his own experience: “We are more similar, than we are dissimilar.”
For Bracey Jr., the move into inspirational speaking is less a departure than a continuation. A father’s voice helped reshape his life. Now he hopes his own can help someone else make a different choice.
