Murray Sabrin’s Mission: Making Americans Financially Independent—One Bold Idea at a Time

For decades, Dr. Murray Sabrin has been a familiar name to students of finance, policy wonks, and liberty-minded thinkers. But today, the retired finance professor, six-time author, and former political candidate has taken on a new role: movement builder.

At 77, Sabrin isn’t slowing down. Instead, he’s channeling a lifetime of academic insight and public service into a bold new initiative—MAFI: Make Americans Financially Independent. More than just a slogan or a stylish baseball cap (though it is that, too), MAFI is Sabrin’s campaign to awaken a nation numbed by debt, dependency, and declining economic literacy.

“After 35 years of teaching the Financial History of the U.S., campaigning for office, and writing books on taxes, healthcare, the Fed, and more,” Sabrin tells Forbes, “I realized I had a compelling story—and an urgent solution. It was time to take the entrepreneurial leap.”

The Rise of MAFI: From Idea to Independence

Sabrin’s philosophy rests on a radical idea: abolishing all taxes and empowering the nonprofit sector to meet human needs through voluntary charitable action. It’s a vision rooted in classical liberal economics and decades of scholarly research. But make no mistake—this isn’t just theory. Sabrin sees MAFI as an actionable roadmap to ease America’s unsustainable financial burdens and reinvigorate a culture of personal responsibility.

“Too many Americans have become dependent on a failing welfare state. The national debt is spiraling. MAFI is about turning the tide—empowering people to reclaim financial independence,” he says.

Challenges in a Noisy Marketplace

Despite the urgency of his mission, Sabrin admits that scaling the MAFI brand hasn’t been easy.

“The biggest challenge is reach,” he says. “I’ve appeared on many podcasts and talk shows, but they haven’t cracked into the mainstream.”

Still, Sabrin is undeterred. He’s now working to broaden MAFI’s digital footprint through new media partnerships, expanded social media efforts, and a soon-to-be-announced affiliate marketing relationship with a prominent economic research institution.

“It’s a strategic move to bring MAFI to a national audience,” Sabrin explains. “If we can elevate the conversation and spotlight these ideas, I believe MAFI can be a transformative force.”

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Behind the scenes, Sabrin has also navigated personal challenges. His wife’s ongoing health battles have tested his resolve, but he credits persistence and purpose for keeping him focused.

“Burnout hasn’t been an issue because I have a mission. Creating MAFI gave me a renewed sense of purpose—and the belief that I can help millions of Americans build more secure, independent lives.”

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those just starting out, Sabrin’s advice is simple but potent: stay persistent, stay principled, and play the long game.

“Don’t chase trends. Build something meaningful and grounded in real-world value,” he says. “When your brand stands for something larger than yourself, it becomes more than a business—it becomes a movement.”

What’s Next for Murray Sabrin?

Looking ahead, Sabrin’s ambitions are far from modest. In addition to growing MAFI’s national presence through key affiliations, he’s also weighing another run for public office—this time with potentially national implications.

“If I run again, it will be to take these ideas directly to the people on the biggest stage possible,” he says. “This country needs a serious financial reset, and I want to be part of that conversation.”

From the lecture hall to the campaign trail, and now to the frontier of digital advocacy, Murray Sabrin is proving that reinvention has no age limit—and that one man’s ideas, if bold enough, just might spark a movement.
