How Authentic Conversations With Gen Z Can Shape the Future of Leadership

Every generation inherits a unique set of challenges, but few have entered adulthood under circumstances as complex as Generation Z. Growing up amid a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, rapid technological change, and an ongoing mental health crisis has shaped a generation that is often discussed but rarely heard.

For Raquel Borras, that imbalance inspired a journey that became much more than a documentary. It became a national conversation.

Her upcoming feature documentary, I Hear You, Gen Z, scheduled for release in the summer of 2026, was born from a simple but powerful question: What if adults stopped trying to explain Generation Z and instead gave them the opportunity to explain themselves? Traveling across the United States in an RV, Borras met with young adults between the ages of 16 and 26, creating space for honest conversations without scripts, agendas, or preconceived conclusions.

Listening as a Leadership Practice

Modern leadership often emphasizes communication, influence, and decision making. Yet one of the most valuable leadership skills is frequently overlooked: listening.

Rather than approaching young people as subjects to be analyzed, I Hear You, Gen Z invites audiences to hear directly from individuals navigating today’s realities. The documentary explores the experiences, concerns, aspirations, and perspectives of a generation facing extraordinary social and economic pressures while challenging long standing assumptions about who they are.

In doing so, the project encourages business leaders, educators, parents, and policymakers to reconsider how meaningful dialogue can strengthen trust across generations.

Turning Advocacy Into Action

The documentary reflects years of dedication to youth advocacy. Through two podcasts focused on conversations with young people, Borras has conducted more than 160 interviews with members of Generation Z, creating an ongoing platform where authentic voices take center stage instead of being filtered through outside interpretation.

Working alongside filmmakers Brian Mulvey and Seth Tucker and featuring interviews with 30 young adults from across the country, the documentary expands that mission by preserving these conversations in a format designed to reach broader audiences. Rather than offering solutions on behalf of Gen Z, the film creates an opportunity for viewers to better understand the generation shaping the future workforce, marketplace, and communities.

Creating Space for the Next Generation

At the heart of the project is a philosophy that feels increasingly relevant in today’s divided world.

“The most powerful thing an adult can do right now is stop talking and start listening. That’s what this film is about.”

As organizations and communities prepare for the next generation of leaders, innovation will depend not only on technology or strategy but also on empathy and understanding. By giving young people a platform to share their own experiences, I Hear You, Gen Z demonstrates that genuine listening is not simply an act of compassion. It is an investment in stronger leadership, better collaboration, and a more connected future.
