Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn D. Owens.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Publisher, Author, and Author Coach. I assist professionals who are struggling with time management, accountability, fear, establishing themselves as an SME in their field, or lack of knowledge of the book writing process, to start a new career as an author.
In 2003, I stepped out on faith and left my comfortable corporate communications job with a fortune 500 company. This exit led to a seven-year lesson on learning to walk in faith, identifying and listening to the voice of God, and trusting His direction and timing. I also learned to further develop and use my gift of discernment by helping professionals make spiritual decisions related to their career choices.
Eventually, I started my first company, The Corporate Couch, to offer career coaching services to professionals. Subsequently, I wrote a book, “Light After a Layoff”, to provide spiritual tools to professionals in career transition. The success of the book led to an expansion of my career coaching business and launched my speaking career. It also caused people to begin asking me HOW to write a book, so I began offering author coaching services in 2017.
In 2020, I officially opened The Owens Publishing Company where we now offer services to help professionals (coaches, counselors, doctors, salespeople, entrepreneurs, ministers, etc.) start a “new career” as an author.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
The Owens Publishing Company was established in June of 2020; near the beginning of the pandemic, and in the midst of civil unrest such as our country has never seen. So much was coming to light about what needed to be done individually and collectively to move our country forward and some hard truths had to be faced. This sobering revelation brought clarity and conflict to many when dealing with colleagues, business partners, service providers, and even family. It hit me especially hard in business, as some professional relationships proved irreparable in the face of injustice, and it was painful. At the same time, a new kind of confidence and determination was emerging in many marginalized people around the world. And it rose up fiercely in me!
The call was for us all to stand up and use our voices for the greater good. I came to the realization during that difficult time period, that my part was to establish The Owens Publishing Company, and help more people start a new career as an author. The “rainbow the cloud” for me, was the realization that I could use my voice to help others use theirs; and our efforts would last forever because books make authors immortal. No one can ever be erased from the history books if I can help write them.
I accepted my call, and established The Owens Publishing Company. It has grown steadily ever since, and will continue to help others build and leave a legacy.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
We help professionals start a new career as a non-fiction author. To be clear, clients do not have to be “writers” in order to become authors. We offer a clearly defined process to document their experiences, and also provide accountability, education. As a result of sharing their inspirational messages with the world, our clients enjoy new business opportunities, more money, becoming respected subject matter experts’ (SMEs) in their fields, and the pleasure of leaving a lasting legacy in written form.
What makes me different is that I am also a career coach (in addition to being an author coach, author and publisher). This skill allows me to uncover information in a unique way, while helping the client to map out next steps in their entrepreneurial journey. Mixing career and author coaching has proven to be a winning combination as I have the expertise and insight to support the client with any challenge they may face on various levels of their journey. I have also walked the same path, and I am still learning and growing so I can continue to serve at higher levels.
In addition, I have a spiritual gift of discernment which allows me to access a different level of wisdom to gently guide the client through areas that might be difficult to navigate on their own. I like to say that I can “sense” where they are being led and I “hold that space” for them until they can see, believe, and experience it for themselves.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
My best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success, is to place God first in all things and follow the guidance given. In my experience, this saves time and provides peace of mind.
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
I find success in knowing that I am flowing in the purpose I was created to fulfill. The only way to know the real purpose of something is to consult with its manufacturer. It is in this way that I view my relationship with God. If I ask my creator for guidance concerning my life, I find success through following the guidance given. To me, this translates into peace of mind.
What’s next for you?
The next steps for The Owens Publishing Company include expanding globally to create partnerships. Gaining education about publishing, marketing, and distribution channels in foreign markets to increase the reach and influence of our authors, is a high priority. We look forward to helping more professionals become authors and share their messages worldwide.
