Beating the Odds: How Author & Life Coach Dominique Johnson Thrived After Adversity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Johnson .

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

My name is Dominique Johnson I am a Mother, Author, Life coach and 2023 Master of Clinical Health Counseling graduate. I am also the owner of Beauty That Moves and Founder of Coaching For The Culture.

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

Success is something that I have strived for since a child. As a foster care youth I already was starting with “statistics” not on my side. That paired with traumatic experiences in my childhood and early adult life , success was something I had to work at. I worked tirelessly even after becoming homeless in pursuit of higher education, a mom partially through my undergraduate degree or even when my second child was diagnosed with autism during my masters all while building a for profit business and non for profit. Giving up wasn’t an option even after my building flooded and I was forced to close my physical space; I was and am determined to change not just my circumstances but people like me who constantly encounter adversity and still push forward with pure intentions.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

As a life coach and a mental health advocate i opened a local community center within my Businuess. I work primarily with the goal of helping people unlearn things that continue to keep them in a cycle of chaos & perpetual survival, mentally and physically. I support my clients as they learn how to thrive and define their own version of happiness success and healthy existence. As a writer poet and author I use poetry to help tell stories of “complex trauma” which is the name of ny newer book. I use poetic imagery to show the impact of traumatic experiences in people of color and the lasting impact these experiences can have generationally . The series will also show the healing power we all have within us and how self work, change, therapy and mindset can shift pain into acceptance and power

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

By defining it for yourself. You will almost always be unfulfilled if you allow everyone else to define your success happiness and worth.

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

I worked hard for over a decade won awards, opened two successful businesses, Coaching For The Culture and Beauty That Moves ; was featured in the news and eventually realized I felt the most successful when I helped everyday ppl make real progress and I didn’t need a building to do that. Doing the work to heal myself so I could be whole for my children and community is my biggest success. Success didn’t mean no days off or no sleep for me. I’ve been there done that and almost ruined myself my health & my mental health. Really I feel the most successful now that I am not trying so hard to fit the expectations of success but allowing myself to define my own worth.

What’s next for you?

Finalizing publishing for my new poetry book “Complex trauma”. Taking a well deserved rest so I can pour into myself the way I do others. And taking the much needed time to dedicate to being a mom, fiancée and friend before I enter this next chapter of life and potentially pursue my PhD.

Finally, how can people connect with you if they want to learn more?
