Manuel Martinez on Turning Setbacks into Style and Building a Brand That Lasts

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, success is rarely linear. But for master tailor Manuel Martinez, each setback was a setup for something greater. From economic downturns to industry rejection, Martinez’s story is one of focus, faith, and timeless style.

Learning From Legends

Martinez’s journey began with a desire to craft garments that projected confidence and elegance. He found inspiration in three of the best: Giacomo Trabalza, tailor to Hollywood’s elite; Bill Fioravanti, who dressed New York’s power players; and Lou Myles, Canada’s leading designer.

“I didn’t wait for opportunity. I knocked on the doors of the best in the business.”

With encouragement from his wife and the work ethic instilled by his parents, Martinez trained under master tailor Nick Lopez in Houston. That foundation would later shape his own legacy.

A Business Built During Hard Times

Launching a tailoring business in 1980s Louisiana during an oil crash was far from ideal. The economy collapsed, people moved away, and money was tight.

“Hard times don’t last. Resourceful people do.”

Martinez focused on those still thriving—community leaders and entrepreneurs who needed to maintain a polished image. Through word-of-mouth and high standards, he built a loyal, influential clientele.

From Rejection to President

One of Martinez’s pivotal moments came in 1982, when he was rejected from the Custom Tailors and Designers Association of America. Rather than let the rejection define him, he reapplied—and was later accepted. In 1997, he was elected President of the same organization.

“Rejection didn’t stop me. It motivated me.”

This exposure led to national recognition, with features in The Robb Report, Cigar Aficionado, and The Wall Street Journal.

Adapting During the Pandemic

When COVID-19 shut down much of the fashion industry, Martinez didn’t freeze. He pivoted. With fewer people wearing suits, he started designing hunting gear, golf trousers, and outerwear—keeping his business running while others stalled.

“We didn’t lose 50% like others. We lost 15%—because we adapted fast.”

The Future is Tailored

Today, Martinez is training his daughter and son-in-law to lead the next chapter. The brand is expanding into custom jeans, polo shirts, and water-resistant field jackets.

“It’s about evolving with elegance—always.”
