Trailblazing Women of Tech: Angela Nakalembe’s Vision for a SaferDigital World

Angela Nakalembe is a trailblazer in the tech industry that has been gaining steady traction for leadership role in promoting internet safety and advocacy for responsible AI development. As a Program Manager at YouTube, Angela works at  the very forefront of balancing the creation of safer digital spaces with user freedom by implementing innovative safety features and risk mitigation strategies that protect billions of users worldwide. Her work within the platform has earned her multiple Google Product Excellence awards, while outside of silicon valley she provides free Yoga classes to marginalized communities. Today, we’ll explore all the different aspects of Angela’s work in order to understand how she became a major driver of change.

Leading the Charge in Digital Safety

As a program manager focusing on user safety, Angela’s work at YouTube revolves around developing and optimizing content moderation systems that ensure users aren’t exposed to harmful content while preserving free expression. Achieving this is a matter of managing large-scale initiatives that need to keep up with the ever evolving nature of public discourse, as well as leveraging new technologies, including the integration of AI into content moderation processes. Her efforts have directly impacted YouTube’s ability to protect its 2 billion users from harmful content while maintaining the integrity of the platform.

Beyond her technical expertise, Angela is known for her ability to collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders, coordinating their efforts to make sure these measures are implemented efficiently.

Championing Diversity in Tech Leadership

Diversity and inclusion are also key aspects of Angela’s work, especially her involvement with the TechWomen program, an initiative by the U.S. Department of State which has helped over a thousand women build careers in the tech industry. In the program, Angela has mentored emerging women leaders in tech from regions such as Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East, helping them gain the skills, knowledge, and networks needed to succeed in the tech industry.

Promoting Wellness and Social Impact

Outside of her work in tech, Angela is also dedicated to improving the well-being of underserved communities. She is a certified yoga instructor who teaches free classes in Chicago, making wellness practices more accessible to individuals who may not otherwise have the opportunity. By offering yoga to underserved populations, Angela is promoting both physical and mental well-being, demonstrating her commitment to holistic social impact.

She contributes to women inducted into the program not only by sharing her expertise in the field, but also her experience as a woman of color in a male dominated sector, guiding inductees through the many challenges presented to them by the industry.

A Vision for a Safer, More Inclusive Digital Future

Angela Nakalembe’s career and advocacy efforts exemplify the impact that women leaders can have on shaping a more inclusive, innovative, and responsible tech industry. Through her work in internet safety, AI integration, and mentoring, Angela is shaping the future of the tech industry, a future where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to a more equitable future.

Her leadership continues to inspire and empower the next generation of women in tech, especially women of color, to break barriers and build a better, more inclusive digital world, and if you’re one of such women trying to make it in the sector, you can have Angela as your mentor.
