From Disabled to Dancer!
Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanesha Scott.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
My journey began in October of 2020 when my life came to a screeching halt. I was diagnosed with a debiltating and incurable autoimmune disease called polymyositis. This disease stripped me of my ability to do every day tasks such as walk up and down the stairs, put my hair in a ponytail, swallow liquids and solids. I discussed my journey in book “When I Got Sick: A Story of Tragedy & Triumph- The First Year,” which is available on Amazon.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
I literally went from being paralyzed suffering from muscle weakness and wasting at 37 years old. This completely changed my outlook on life. The things that we do daily without a second thought was taken away from me without warning. I had to endure intense physical therapy, take medications that caused major side effects, not to mention the negative psychological and emotional effects it had on me. Fast-forward to early 2022 by the grace of God I have been in remission for almost a year. I have regained most of my strength back which eventually inspired me to start dancing.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
I am a Life Coach, however since my diagnosis I have been on hiatus. This is bigger than me. I initially wrote my book to encourage people to not give up hope. Having an incurable disease takes a toll on a person physically, mentally, and spiritually. I had many dark days, but I am grateful that I am able to see the other side of it. I have always been really inspired by hip-hop dancers. Now with that being said- I am not a dancer by nature. But I decided now that I have regained strength I am going to follow my heart and start dancing. I started making Tik-Tok dance videos earlier this year. Although I am not a natural dancer and really can’t catch a beat to save my life, I am having a blast and putting a smile on my face and everyone else’s.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
Success involves taking that initial leap of faith. As I stated before, I’ve never known how to dance, but God has given me a second chance at mobility so now I am going to take advantage of it. Follow your heart and never worry about what others think. You only have one life to live so live it to the fullest without regrets!
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Success means following my heart’s desires. Also not being afraid of taking risks. If I had been afraid to try different things I would have never wrote my first book or had the courage to start dancing!
What’s next for you?
I will continue to educate everyone on this rare autoimmune disease polymyositis. My intent is to hopefully inspire people who are second-guessing themselves to start following their dreams and aspirations. Be on the lookout for another book in 2023 and I will continue to enjoy being a dancing machine!
